Valentine’s Day is the perfect occasion to spend some quality time in the kitchen with your little sweethearts. This not only allows you to celebrate the day in delicious fashion, but it also lets you introduce your young darlings to a new love: cooking!

Gelatin hearts

To prepare this recipe, you’ll need two packages of red dessert gelatin (in the flavour and brand of your choice), a cooker cutter in the shape of a heart, and a baking sheet.

  1. Combine 1¼ cups boiling water and the gelatin powder, then stir mixture until powder dissolves completely.
  2. Pour the mixture into a pre-greased baking sheet, then refrigerate for at least 3 hours, until the gelatin has set.
  3. Insert lightly-oiled cookie cutter into gelatin, then remove gently. Repeat process until all the gelatin has been “cut out.” Remove surrounding gelatin so that only cut-out hearts remain on the baking sheet.
  4. Using a spatula, gently remove the hearts and place them on a serving plate.
  5. Store plate in refrigerator until ready to serve.
  6. Serve with strawberry coulis (available in most grocery stores), or with fresh strawberries or raspberries. For an added burst of fun, sprinkle with pomegranate seeds!
